To rid yourself of unwarranted e-mail, which may be junk mail, or malicious mail containing a virus, or claims that you have been left money from an Uncle in Africa (who believed these and who still believes these??), you can delete it, block the sender or 'bounce' to claim you do not exist.

Mac Mail used to have a Bounce feature that allows you to send an automatic return message or 'bounced' message back to the sender. The return message the sender receives should claim your email address to have permanent and fatal errors - although some spam uses a false email address or hijacks someone else's address as the sender.

In Lion this occasional useful feature has been removed (why?).  However it can be done using a script, and the notes that follow cover our initial use of the Mac Automator App.

Mac Email no longer contains 'Bounce' for unwanted emails, however it can be added back via an Automator script, example below.

Select message(s) to be bounced, then select 'Mail', 'Services', where the 'Bounce' option is then shown.
